Everton winger Theo Walcott’s disappointing run of form continued in his side’s last-gasp 2-2 draw with Watford at Goodison Park on Monday night, and Southampton should look to bring him back to St Mary’s less than a year after they lost out on his signature.
What’s the word, then?
Well, then Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino was keen to bring the winger to St Mary’s this time last year to boost his team as they struggled at the wrong end of the Premier League table, but they eventually lost out to the Toffees.
Having narrowly avoided the drop and then started the current campaign poorly under Pellegrino’s successor Mark Hughes, the Welshman was sacked and replaced by new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, who faces an uphill struggle to keep the south coast outfit in the top flight.
With just 13 goals in 16 league games it is clear to see that they need to add some firepower to their squad in the New Year, and the Everton man could be a great addition.
Why Walcott?
The former Arsenal man is currently struggling for form with one goal in his previous 15 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, but he has remained a regular fixture in Marco Silva’s starting XI because of the quality and experience that he has.
While things may not be going well for him at Goodison Park right now, there is no doubt that he could make a big difference in Hasenhuttl’s preferred 4-2-2-2 system, and the fact that he came through the ranks and made his debut as a 16-year-old for the club should mean there is that extra motivation to keep them in the Premier League.
Saints don’t really have any out-and-out wingers right now aside from Nathan Redmond and potentially Mohamed Elyounoussi, and Walcott would provide some much-needed pace on the counter for the south coast club in their bid for survival.
