Newcastle have experienced a downturn in form recently with one win in 10 league games, and that has led Isaac Hayden to comment on Steve Bruce’s system and one factor that is very different from last season.
The major change for the Magpies this term has been up-front, with Joelinton replacing the departed Salomon Rondon, but the Brazilian has so far failed to live up to standards.
His one league goal is shocking enough, but compared to Rondon he lacks the skills required to be a targetman, or so Hayden thinks at least.
Interesting, though, Joelinton’s average of 5.4 aerial dues won per game means he outperforms Rondon in that area, who managed 4.6 per game last season, but fans agree with their midfielder that he still fails to act as a focal point of the attack.
That is a big worry for the Magpies on the pitch as it means Joelinton contributes little to the team, but it is an even bigger concern for what it says about the recruitment at the club, as £40m was spent on the striker.
Bruce has failed to get the best out of the 23-year-old or change things up to suit his style, showing his stubbornness by continuing with his 5-2-3 system.
Some supporters have pointed criticism in his direction because of that, arguing that Rafa Benitez had a better strategy in place to suit the players at his disposal, including Rondon.
Others have interpreted Hayden’s comments as a dig at the recruitment and ultimately the board who control those matters, as Joelinton was clearly not the right addition to make, and the north-east outfit are suffering for it.
Some sections of the fanbase are a little shocked that players can see the problems yet those in power can’t, as it demonstrates that the club is not being run to a high enough standard, and results are suffering as a result.
